Ludovic announces his first season as Music Director of Barcelona Symphony

At 19:30 CEST this evening, Ludovic and the Barcelona Symphony announce their 2022/23 season – the first under his leadership as Music Director.

Ludovic is joined this season by OBC’s new Principal Guest Conductor Marta Gardolinska and their Artist in Residence for the season Nicolas Altstaedt, with a focus in 2022/23 on ‘Death or Return’. 

The season includes premieres from featured composers Sofia Gubaidulina and Hans Abrahamsen, as well as from composers including Gabriella Smith, Olga Neuwirth, Unsuk Chin, Octavi Rumbau and David Lang. Catalan composers will be well represented, including Robert Gerhard, Albert Guinovart, Raquel Garcia-Tomas, Felip Pedrell.

Ludovic’s own programmes range widely from new works to Mahler (Kindertotenlieder, Symphonies 4 & 5), Messiaen, Ravel and Boulanger, Haydn and Brahms. Guest conductors include Mena, Macelaru, Vasily Petrenko, Matthias Pintscher, Roderick Cox, Elim Chan, Anja Bijlmaier.

Guest artists appearing with the Barcelona Symphony include Perianes, Chamayou, Isata Kanneh-Mason, Andreas Haefliger, Abragimova, Frang, Bomsori, Jorg and Carolin Widmann, Pahud, Ottensamer, and singers Sarah Connolly and Audrey Luna.

Ludovic also announced a three-pronged recording initiative on the orchestra’s own label, of works by Catalan composers, female composers (past and present), and a Ravel cycle beginning with the operas, with the first two discs to be recorded this Summer.
