Ludovic has received critical acclaim for his return to Seattle Opera last month, where he conducted two concert performances of Saint-Saëns Samson & Delilah at McCaw Hall. Not heard in Seattle since 1965, the concerts featured a thrilling star-studded cast of Yonghoon Lee (Samson), J’Nai Bridges (Delilah), and Greer Grimsley (High Priest).
‘Audiences have long admired Seattle Symphony Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot’s interpretations of his native French music. Last seen in the Seattle Opera pit with Béatrice et Bénédict, Morlot brought his usual Gallic vigor and flair to Saint-Saëns’ score. Sensuality was the name of the game, and Morlot knew exactly how to coax voluptuousness out of every instrument, but also emphasized the special beauty, which was a revelation to hear onstage rather than in the pit. With powerful gestures, Morlot continued to build tension throughout the performance, culminating in a compelling Bacchanale.’
Bachtrack
‘One of Morlot’s great strengths is his insistence on clarity from the orchestra. He expertly drew out the exoticism of Saint-Saëns, creating a vivid and dynamic soundscape that entranced the audience. The orchestra’s balance was impeccable, which allowed the singers to shine without distraction. Even in the final act, when the focus turns to the famous bacchanale, Morlot whipped up the needed wildness to convey the scene while keeping textures crystal clear. It was easy to remember a time when the Seattle Symphony, under the expert guidance of Morlot’s baton, had forged a distinct and visionary identity…the concert was stunning…nothing short of exceptional.’
Seen and Heard International
‘The indispensable center of the production was Ludovic Morlot … it was a heroic job: well done.’
