Not a piece for a faint-hearted orchestra – but the BBC Phil was up to the task… the orchestral players rose to the challenges magnificently under the guiding hand of conductor Ludovic Morlot, who found a razor-sharp precision when needed but also gave the soloists’ music room to breathe… it was a marvel. Bravo to the BBC Philharmonic for revealing the colours of this little-known masterpiece with such bewitching artistry. 5 stars

Ravel’s music occupies a special place in the repertoire of Ludovic Morlot…and the OBC and its conductor convince. Their Ravel is exquisite, with a baton that delineates versions in which nothing is left to chance and everything is is taken care of to the extreme: the tempo, the rhythm, the dynamic gradations, the way the themes breathe and the composer’s own inexhaustible palette of timbres…This disc is exceptional for the work of the performers and the quality of the recording. This complete cycle undoubtedly aims very high. – 5 stars

It has long been clear that the OBC needed a director like Morlot. The whole has gained in solidity, fluidity, balance, impasto and love of detail. The Frenchman is not afraid to throw himself out forcefully like the one at the end of Daphnis et Chloé but what is most amazing is the subtlety with which he sustains the pianissimi, how he makes the orchestra breathe calmly and nobly and how he breaks the monotony with a wise use of dynamics. Morlot’s delicacy and elegance seem to give security to the members of the orchestra, where soloists now stand out and there seem to be no subordinate strings.
